The Science Behind Our Cultivation Process

Eight-step infographic showing the Tribute Trees cultivation process, from choosing a tree to soil rebalancing with gypsum, sulphur and worm castings, through to root establishment and delivery.

Every Tribute Tree is cultivated using a carefully developed process that combines horticultural science with deep respect for the life being honoured.

When a family entrusts us with the ashes of a loved one, we do not simply add them to a pot with a tree. Instead, we spend four to 12 weeks carefully restoring the growing environment before the tree is ready for its forever home.

Why Does the Soil Need to Be Rebalanced?

Cremated remains are very different from ordinary garden soil.

They are naturally alkaline and contain high concentrations of minerals and sodium. Horticultural research has shown that elevated sodium levels reduce water uptake and impair root function, while highly alkaline soils reduce the availability of essential micronutrients that trees need to grow and thrive.

Without careful preparation, these conditions can make it difficult for new roots to establish and may compromise the long-term health of the tree.

Our Cultivation Process

The majority of our work begins after the ashes have been thoughtfully integrated into the soil.

Rather than simply planting the tree, we begin the careful process of restoring the soil to a healthy growing environment. Depending on the needs of the tree and the condition of the growing medium, we incorporate up to six carefully selected soil amendments, including ingredients such as gypsum, sulphur and worm castings.

These amendments are not added all at once. They are incorporated into the soil in a specific sequence, allowing each ingredient to do its job before the next is introduced. Throughout the cultivation process, we regularly test the soil and make adjustments to achieve the appropriate pH, soil structure and nutrient availability for the selected tree species.

This process cannot be rushed. Healthy soil takes time to stabilize, and healthy roots take time to establish.

Four to 12 Weeks of Care

Every Tribute Tree remains in cultivation for four to 12 weeks while we continue to monitor the soil, observe the tree's health and make adjustments as needed.

Only when the soil has been carefully balanced and the tree has successfully established healthy new roots is it ready to leave our nursery.

A Living Memorial Built to Last

A Tribute Tree is more than a tree with cremated ashes added to the soil.

It is a living memorial created through a thoughtful cultivation process that combines science, patience and care. Every step is designed to create the healthiest possible growing environment, giving your tree the strongest possible foundation for a lifetime of growth.

What Makes a Tribute Tree Different?

Every Tribute Tree is created through a carefully managed cultivation process that is designed to support the long-term health of both the tree and its growing environment.

✔ A small portion, or all, of the cremated ashes are thoughtfully integrated into the soil.

✔ We carefully restore and rebalance the soil using up to six horticultural amendments selected for the needs of each tree.

✔ These amendments are incorporated in a specific sequence, while the soil is regularly tested and monitored to achieve the appropriate pH and growing conditions.

✔ Every tree spends four to 12 weeks in cultivation, allowing healthy new roots to establish before it is delivered.

The result is a beautiful living memorial, thoughtfully cultivated to thrive for generations.
